FAQS ABOUT MALTESE DOGS AND PUPPIES

What is the difference between Male and Female?

"Male dogs tend to be more emotionally stable, less prone to mood swings.
They can also be tougher and more aggressive than females, though many males are big goofy softies."

"Female dogs tend to be more prone to emotional theatrics, more opinionated and "out of sorts" when things make them uncomfortable or don't go their way. But they are also very happy, sweet, and gentle when their world is going well."

Nutro Ultra Puppy - Dry Kibble or you can buy another kind but gradually mix
the new food in with the old food to keep from upsetting his/her tummy.

What kind of toys should I buy my new puppy?

Teething toys, squeaker toys and cuddling toys.
Teething toys such as nylabones are great. Rawhide is not a good choice
because they could choke on it.

Will my Maltese need Vitamins?

No, it is not necessary if you are feeding him/her high quality food.

How can I control my Maltese tearing?

Avoid foods with artificial coloring such as dried beet pulp and foods with preservatives. Keep the hair trimmed around your Maltese eyes because hair rubs against there eyes causing there eyes to become irritated. A teaspoon of white cider vinegar can be added to your dogs drinking water to control new tear stains. Filtered water sometimes works for controlling tear stains. Angels' Eyes is an excellent product and it works great. It is costly but is worth it. You can find that online or buy it from us.

What can I do to Prevent Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and what are signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia in a Maltese?

If your puppy becomes shaky, weak, wobbly, disoriented, glassy eyed or has seizures your dog may have hypoglycemia. If you notice this IMMEDIATELY give your puppy NutriCal or Corn Syrup. Your veterinarian can diagnose your pet with a quick blood test by testing the blood glucose or blood sugar. If your Maltese will not eat give him Nutrical or Nutristat. Always have Nutrical or Nutristat on hand. You can find this at Petsmart for about $5.00. If you do not have those two items use KARO SYRUP. Your Maltese should be fed 3 small meals a day to help avoid hypoglycemia. Sometimes we mix Karo Syrup in the drinking water. If you do that be sure to change the water daily to avoid bacteria growth. If left untreated Hypoglycemia can kill your pet.

Will my Maltese stay Warm without a jacket on in the Winter?

It depends on the weather conditions and how long you are outside. I would suggest dressing your dog in the appropriate attire for the conditions. Maltese love to walk, day or night, winter, summer spring or fall, even in the rain or snow. If you plan to walk when the weather is bad you should consider investing in a sweater and/or raincoat for your Maltese. Tiny doggy boots are also available at most pet stores to protect little feet in extreme conditions. They can get frostbite on there feet if they are walking in snow or ice for an extended period of time. As if a Maltese was not adorable enough on their own they are even more adorable with their little sweater and raincoat on. Having them dressed in a sweater or raincoat will help them enjoy their frequent walks.

Hot weather can be very dangerous for your Maltese as well. Always make sure that he does not stay outside too long, especially on very hot, humid days. Dogs die every year from over heating.

How often should I groom my Maltese?

We recommend grooming your Maltese at least once a month. Brushing is recommended daily. Do not wash them more than once every two weeks because doing so will wash off the dogs natural oils causing there skin to dry out. The easiest way to keep there hair from getting mats is to have your groomer give your new pet a puppy cut as seen in the picture.

How much will it cost to spay or neuter my dog?

It could cost anywhere between $45 and $300 or more. At a Humane Society expect to pay anywhere from $45 to $135. Clinics and Animal Hospitals may charge $200 - $300 or more.

Why Should I spay or neuter my dog?

There are many benefits of spaying or neutering you pet.

Neutering your male may decrease the aggression males have towards other dogs, it can decrease there desire to roam, it can decrease urine marking and other bad habits they are known for.

Spaying your female may reduce the risk of mammary tumors, reproductive breeding, uterine tumors, infection and unplanned pregnancies.

Will my Maltese need another shot?

Yes, He will need one at 10 weeks of age and another one at 14 weeks of age. I recommend giving the 5 way shot rather than the 7 way shot because there is less potential for adverse reactions to the 5 way vaccine.

How much does it cost to have my Maltese shipped?

The price ranges from $250 to $350. We will ship anywhere in the Continental
US. We require full payment before shipping your puppy.

Will you deliver my puppy to me?

Absolutely! We will drive up to 30 miles free of charge. Delivery is also
available to VA, SC, GA, NC and DC for additional fee.

What is the best way to get matts out of my Maltese's hair?

Flea Combs & Conditioner. The best way to prevent matts is by combing your Maltese's hair daily. Never wash your Maltese if it has lots of matts, it will only make it worse. Get all the matts out and then wash him/her.If the matts are hard to comb out then you may have to cut them out. Be very careful not to cut
your dog - you may need to have your Maltese clipped by a professional. If your Maltese gets a puppy cut by your groomer once every month or two you should not have matts to worry about.

What are some healthy foods or snacks for my puppy?

There are many heathy snacks for your new puppy. Apples (without the seeds), carrots, cantelope, bananas, tomatos, green beans, peaches, strawberries, sweet potatoes, pears (no seeds), pumpkin, potatoes, liver, squash, chicken and turkey are all just a start. They can eat most fruits and vegetables.

If you want to buy them snacks from the pet store I recommend only treats with all meat. Wheat, Soy and Corn Starch should NOT be ingredients in the treats you buy because it is unhealthy for your pet.

What foods are toxic to my puppy?

Do not feed them chocolate, onions, garlic, Macadamia Nuts, fatty foods, yeast dough (Unbaked Bread), Baking Powder and Baking Soda, alcohol, seeds from apples, grapes or raisins. There are many other foods that are toxic. Click here to find out

My dog is not eating. What can I do to encourage him eat?

Offer Chicken Broth with low sodium. They will almost always take that. Make sure they are drinking plenty of water. By Adding chicken broth to there food you will help stimulate there appetite.

Boiled chicken with no bones and rice seems to help as well. Do not add butter, salt or seasonings - keep it plain & simple.
